Still Life with Books
Jan Lievens, c. 1627-28Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A pile of worn books in the shadows, painted so well it was once thought to be a Rembrandt.
Jan Lievens painted Still Life with Books around 1627 in Leiden, when he and the young Rembrandt worked side by side and shared models, ideas and ambition. Battered volumes lie stacked and tumbling, their pages curled and their bindings cracked.
For years the painting was credited to Rembrandt. A 2014 Rijksmuseum study returned it to Lievens. The original hangs in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
