The Goldfinch
Carel Fabritius, 1654Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A small bird chained to its perch. The painting at the heart of Donna Tartt's novel.
Carel Fabritius painted The Goldfinch in 1654. A goldfinch sits on its feeder box against a pale plaster wall, a fine chain around its leg. Painted life-size, it looks real enough to step off the wall.
Fabritius was Rembrandt's most gifted pupil. He died the same year, aged 32, when a gunpowder store exploded in Delft and destroyed much of the city. Only a handful of his paintings survive. The Goldfinch hangs in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, and inspired Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
The look
Soft ochre, warm cream and the bright yellow flash of the bird's wing. Simple, luminous and haunting. Dutch Golden Age wall art suited to a dark academia library, study or hallway.
