Albert Pinkham Ryder worked on The Race Track for more than a decade. A skeleton with a scythe rides a pale horse the wrong way around a deserted course, while a snake lies coiled in the foreground.
Ryder painted it after hearing about a waiter he knew who bet his savings on a horse race, lost everything and took his own life. The painting turned a newspaper tragedy into a vision from the Book of Revelation. The original hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The look
