The Nubian Guard
Charles Knighton Warren, 1883Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A3, plus 12x16 inches. He stands at the doorway with a curved sword in both hands. He looks past us, watchful and still.
Charles Knighton Warren painted The Nubian Guard in 1883. Warren was an English painter, and this is an Orientalist work, part of a fashion among European artists for scenes of North Africa and the Middle East. Those paintings often imagined the East more than they recorded it. This one stands out for its focus on a single man and his dignity.
He wears a steel helmet crested with black feathers, a veil of chainmail and a sea green cloak. Look closely at the silver band on his arm and the tiles and carpet hanging behind him, painted pattern by pattern. Notice his grip on the long curved blade. Warren gives him the full weight of a formal portrait.
The look
Sea green, steel grey and warm terracotta against pale patterned tiles. Strong, quiet and richly detailed. Portrait wall art for a dark academia study, a hallway or a maximalist living room. Printed on a warm off-white border, so the feathers and the sword stay whole.

This painting stops at A3. Above that size the original photograph loses the fine detail of the brushwork, so the shop does not offer it.
Custom sizes on request. Inch sizes have a slightly different shape from A sizes, so the edges trim a little. Size guide
