The Earl of Dalhousie
John Singer Sargent, 1900Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A2, plus 12x16 and 18x24 inches. His tenants paid for this portrait to mark his 21st birthday. A century later, Britain barred it from leaving the country.
John Singer Sargent painted the young Earl of Dalhousie in 1900, a gift from the tenants of his Scottish estates to celebrate his coming of age. Sargent painted him with the easy elegance which made him the most sought-after portraitist of his era.
In 2020, the UK placed an export bar on the painting, valued at £7.5 million, to give a British gallery the chance to keep it in the country.
The look
Dark tailoring, soft light and Sargent's fluid brushwork. Elegant, confident and timeless. Old money portrait wall art suited to a dark academia study, hallway or drawing room.

This painting stops at A2. Above that size the original photograph loses the fine detail of the brushwork, so the shop does not offer it.
Custom sizes on request. Inch sizes have a slightly different shape from A sizes, so the edges trim a little. Size guide
