John Singer Sargent painted Man Wearing Laurels in the late 1870s, while training in the Paris studio of Carolus-Duran. The sitter wears a laurel wreath, the crown of poets and victors in ancient Greece and Rome.
The painting shows the young Sargent already in command of light and character, years before his society portraits made him famous. The original belongs to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
