The Apparition by Gustave Moreau shows Salome after her dance for King Herod. She has won her prize, the head of John the Baptist, and now it rises before her in a halo of light, still dripping blood. She points straight at it. Look closely at everyone else in the palace. No one reacts. Perhaps the vision is Salome's alone. Burnished gold, dusky amber and a burst of white light.
Moreau painted this oil between 1876 and 1877. He was a leader of Symbolism, a movement which painted dreams, moods and inner visions. A watercolour version caused a stir at the Paris Salon of 1876, and the novelist Joris-Karl Huysmans later wrote about Moreau's Salome in his cult novel Against Nature. This oil hangs in the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Moreau left his house and studio to the French state, and it opened as the Musée Gustave Moreau in Paris. The print sits on a warm off-white border, so the whole palace stays in view.
The look
