Hypatia
Julius Kronberg, 1889Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. She looks up from her scroll, as if she has heard footsteps on the stair.
Julius Kronberg painted Hypatia in 1889. Hypatia of Alexandria was a philosopher, mathematician and astronomer, the most famous woman scholar of the ancient world. She taught in Alexandria around the year 400 and was killed by a mob in 415. Kronberg shows her seated on a terrace, a veil over her hair and a scroll unrolled across her knees, with temples and gardens below.
Look closely at her face. She turns from her reading towards something we cannot see, alert and unafraid. Kronberg was a Swedish painter who lived in Rome for twelve years, and he painted this in the year he returned to Stockholm. He later painted the ceilings of rooms in the Royal Palace there.
The look
Ivory drapery, terracotta and a pale Mediterranean sky. Calm, intelligent and quietly tense. Library wall art for a study, a home library or a reading room, and dark academia decor with a real woman of learning at its centre.
