The Fallen Angel
Alexandre Cabanel, 1847Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A3, plus 12x16 inches.A worn leather armchair, a bare concrete wall, and above it Lucifer, freshly fallen. Picture him watching over you while you read.
Fallen Angel by Alexandre Cabanel shows Lucifer moments after his fall from Heaven. He lies on a rock, his dark wings folded behind him, his face half hidden behind his crossed arm. Look closely at his eyes. There are tears in them, and fury. Behind him, the other angels fly on through the blue sky, away from him. Sky blue, copper hair and peacock-dark wings. Notice how small and distant the other angels look, already far from him.
Cabanel painted it in Rome in 1847, when he was 24. He had won the Prix de Rome and a place at the Villa Medici, and the painting was one of the works he sent home to Paris to show his progress. Few French painters dared this subject, and Cabanel painted it with pity as well as fear. Cabanel later became one of the most successful painters in France, famous for The Birth of Venus, which Napoleon III bought at the Salon of 1863. The original hangs in the Musée Fabre, Montpellier, given by the painter's brother in 1889.
The look
Bright sky blue, copper hair and warm skin against peacock dark wings. Proud, wounded and full of feeling. Gothic wall art for a dark academia study, a gothic bedroom or a home library.
