A Majestic Tree in the Evening Light
Oswald Achenbach, 1852Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. The day is almost over. One great tree holds the last of the light.
Oswald Achenbach signed and dated A Majestic Tree in the Evening Light in 1852, soon after a study trip to Italy around 1850, when he sketched in the hills near Olevano Romano outside Rome. A vast tree fills two thirds of the canvas, its crown glowing orange against a deep turquoise sky. Below it, a stream catches the sunset and a small figure is almost lost in the grass.
Achenbach was a leading painter of the Düsseldorf school, and his elder brother Andreas was a celebrated landscape painter too. Oswald became the master of Italian light. Notice how the warm glow lands only on the trunk and the edges of the leaves, while the rest of the scene slips into shadow. The painting sold at the Dorotheum in Vienna in 2017.
The look
Burnt orange, olive green and a sky that fades from turquoise to gold. Calm, warm and quietly grand. Vintage wall art for a study, a reading room or a country kitchen, and a landscape that suits dark academia decor and French country rooms alike.
